Since I posted this -- very recently, our friend died at 93 - after entering a "nursing home" eleven years ago. She has one offspring.
Interesting discussion. I think Krista Tippett does have some interesting guests, and over the years death and dying has been a topic that has come up several times on her show.
This particular conversation was with Jane Gross, author of the book A Bittersweet Season. I'm off to the public library to pick it up now! I believe it is a memoir of the period when her mother ceased to be independent and in good health, and became dependent on her children and other carers.
Yes, we all hope to be climbing in the Himalayas one year, and die the next. For many this will happen (well, not necessarily the Himalayas, but enjoy a walk to the post office and the shops, for instance!) For others there will be a long period of illness, dependence and low quality of life.
