A survey of 12,000 AARP members conducted by Homewood Suites by Hilton found approximately 60% of respondents preferred to travel within North America, rather than overseas. Additionally, four in 10 said they'd rather drive to their destination than fly.

Respondents were also asked about their travel companions. The vast majority - 77% - shared they travel only with their spouses or partners.

The study also found respondents favored frequent, shorter trips.

"This survey is consistent with what our members have been telling us --- that travel is important to them,” said Dave Austin, vice president of marketing services, AARP Services Inc. “We know that our members take a couple of trips a year and stay for about a week, what we call the everyday life travel, traveling short distances to visit family and friends, and they look for the amenities they are used to at home."
