This year, the Medicare Open Enrollment period overlaps with the enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act exchange marketplaces. AARP has recognized that this overlap may cause confusion and the likelihood of scams targeting older individuals.
The Illinois chapter of AARP shared that, as in the past, open enrollment for Medicare lasts from October 15 until December 7. During this time, eligible seniors will be able to shop for a new Medicare plan.
AARP also noted the importance of recognizing the difference between Medicare Open Enrollment and open enrollment for the new health insurance marketplaces. The health insurance marketplaces are not for Medicare beneficiaries. Unfortunately, it is common for people to try to trick older individuals during this time; therefore, it is important to understand that it is illegal for someone to knowingly sell a marketplace plan to a Medicare beneficiary.
Use the Medicare Plan Finder tool to find the best plan for you. If you are happy with your current plan, you do not need to do anything during the Open Enrollment period.
