According to a recent survey conducted by Aon Hewitt, 60% of retirees considered the amount of information presented to them during Medicare enrollment to be overwhelming.
"For many seniors, it is the first time they've had to think about enrolling in Medicare benefits, and they are not sure where to start," said Tina Maldonado, retiree experience leader for Aon Hewitt. "The good news is that retirees have access to more help and assistance than ever before. They should take advantage of the resources and tools that are available to help them understand Medicare and enroll in the right plan to meet their individual health and financial needs."
Aon Hewitt provided several tips to seniors who are enrolling in Medicare.
Begin the process early. Give yourself plenty of time to go through all of the various options and make an informed decision.
Pay attention to the details. Be sure you understand how your plan will work, what your costs will be and how/when you will be able to make changes to your coverage. Also, confirm that your medications will be covered and that your doctor and hospitals are included.
Do your research. Make sure you look into all available options and consider your individual needs.
Shop around. Take advantage of the Medicare exchange marketplaces to compare plans by various factors, such as price and insurance company.
Enlist the help of your available tools and resources. It’s always a good idea to speak with someone who can advise you when making these important decisions. Online tools and resources can also be very helpful.
