A recent poll from the American Red Cross shows that two-thirds of consumers plan to make a donation to charity, despite national economic problems.

In addition, close to 70% noted they will donate the same amount - if not more - than they did during the holiday season in 2010, the poll found. In total, 80% of these people said they were in the same or worse financial situation now than last year.

"Despite the difficult economy Americans want to give to help others in need," said Gail McGovern, Red Cross President and Chief Executive Officer. "With so many people out of work, they want to give something that means something.

Consumers who want to donate to charity and are setting up a retirement strategy may want to discuss their plans with a professional. While donating is certainly worthwhile, it may be important to ensure a person doesn't jeopardize their personal financial situation or year-end tax plan.
